Who is Deleyna?

Picture of DeleynaI am the proud mother of 3 energetic children, ages 6 through 19. I also tend to collect additional children the way most people collect stray cats. Of late, I have the cats as well. My passion has been writing since I could hold a pencil. As a young woman, I learned to program and discovered that I have a talent for helping people and computers learn to work together and play nice. When I'm not teaching my 6 year old her letters, working on my writing, or designing for the internet, I can be found in the kitchen or wandering our local beaches.

I graduated from Santa Clara University many years ago with a BA in English/Creative Writing, a Minor in Anthropology and the equivalent of a Minor in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (the university would not offer the minor officially until the next quarter, but I completed all of the coursework). What this tells you is that I had no idea what I wanted to be, and followed my various interests.

What I discovered as I entered the working world was that computers were confusing to a lot of people, and that most computer folks had no idea how to explain the technical stuff to regular people. I also learned early on in my programming career that the best program is one that does what the user needs it to do. If it can do that and be fun, life is good.

With time off for having children and homeschooling, I managed from time to time to work in my own business doing basic, affordable graphic design. A move and lots of other work later, I found myself learning web based programming in order to help market my family's aviation business. A little surprised by the success of web marketing, I did more research and began helping friends with their sites. Finally, all of my interests came together in one coherent field. My love of writing helped me with content. Anthropology helped me to understand my audience and enabled me to do the market research to make sure a site met the needs of the end user. My graphic design experience helped me to make sure the end product wasn't the ugliest creation in the universe, and my love of computer programming helped me put the whole thing together and make it live.

The problem was, my love of writing intervened. So while I've kept some information on the site to help writers design their own websites, and I do  occasionally tinker, I'm now putting all of my efforts into writing -- well, when I'm not homeschooling my daughter or cooking.
